5th Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art Preview

07 august — 04 september 2019

The GUM-Red-Line Gallery on Red Square presents a group exhibition of contemporary Ural art. The show will unite art pieces of various genres and styles — a preview of the 5th Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art.

Contemporary Ural art became an important phenomenon in Russian art in great part thanks to the Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art — an international exhibition that is being held in Yekaterinburg since 2010. Artists from Yekaterinburg, Nizhny Tagil, and other Ural cities reinterpret the images of the Post-Soviet context by actively participating in museum and gallery projects in Russia and abroad.

The 5th Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art will be held in Yekaterinburg from September 12 to December 1, 2019. The central theme is Immortality. GUM-Red-Line Gallery presents a preview group exhibition that will help art lovers to familiarize themselves with Ural artists who have previously participated in the Biennial.

Visitors of the GUM-Red-Line Gallery will be able to see pieces by artists participating in the 5th Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art: sculptures by Ilya Grishaev, photos by Ivan Petrokovich, animations by Masha Sedyaeva, Ural toys by Anna and Vitaly Cherepanov. Participants of the 4th Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art Sergey Poteryaev, Fyodor Telkov, Alexey Shigalev, GKP Group, Lyudmila Kalinichenko. They will present the projects that were shown at past exhibitions. Artist and curator Vladimir Seleznev, participant of the 2nd Ural Industrial Biennial, will present his series Suprematism from Euroshop (2016 — 2018) part of which is on display in the Stadtgalerie, Kiel (Germany).

"The main focus of the Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art is to introduce the regional character of Ural art within an international context. Glocality is an important movement in contemporary world art, and we are developing this trend. The theme of the 5th Biennial is Immortality. This is a good reason to consider results: what remains of production and art processes? We are glad to be able to present the phenomenon of Ural art by organizing an exhibition of projects by Biennial participants at the new GUM-Red Line Gallery", — notes Alisa Prudnikova, Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art Commissioner.

"The preview of the 5th Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art at GUM-Red-Line Gallery underlines the importance of regional art for the development of Russian contemporary art. We do consider that a presentation of art by up-and-coming and established Ural artists is both interesting and timely. Most of the projects will be shown for the first time in Moscow", — says Igor Kazakov, GUM-Red-Line Gallery Director.

The exhibition will present pieces by the following artists who have previously participated in the Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art:

Ilya Grishaev, Lyudmila Kalinichenko, Ivan Petrokovich, Sergey Poteryaev, Sasha Saltanova, Masha Sedyaeva, Vladimir Seleznev, Fyodor Telkov, Alexey Tokmakov and Alexander Batalov (GKP Group), Anna and Vitaly Cherepanov, Alexey Shigalev

Preview curators: Svetlana Usoltseva, Marina Fedorovskaya

The Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art is organized and held by the ROSIZO National Center of Contemporary Art since 2010 under the leadership of Alisa Prudnikova. The industrial power of the Ural Region is always the central theme of the project, ensuring that the event holds a special place on the international scene. 319 artists from 45 countries took part in the Biennial projects in 2010-2017. During this time Ekaterina Degot, Cosmin Kostinadas, David Riff (2010), Yaroslava Bubnova (2012), Bilyana Chirich, Li Zhenhua (2015), Joan Ribas (2017) were the curators of the main projects at the Biennial.

The 5th Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art will be held in Yekaterinburg from September 12 to December 1, 2019, at two main venues: the Ural Optical and Mechanical Plant and the Coliseum Cinema. 75 artists and art groups from 25 countries will take part in the main project. The Curator of 5th Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art is Weng Xiaoyu, curator of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York). The main theme this year is Immortality. The Biennial will include the main project, public program, special project, and the art residence program which will cover 10 cities in Sverdlovsk, Chelyabinsk, Tyumen, Orenburg Oblasts, as well as Perm Krai. The main event of the Biennial public program is the Symposium (September 12-15) — a key conference the participants of which will consider how the images of immortality impact contemporary culture (i.e. digital immortality) and why a universal technological future is not a guarantee. The event is targeted at a wide audience of people active in the creative field and interested in projects lying between humanities and technologies. Art historians, art critics, philosophers, curators, media theoreticians from Russia, Germany, Sweden, Poland, Denmark, and the USA will take part in the Symposium.
