st.st Series, 2019
For the 5th Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art, Ilya Grishaev will create a fresco which will echo the st.st sculpture series to be presented at GUM-Red-Line. All the wooden sculptures are decorated with ornamental type characters that are an allusion to the non-verbal language. By combining machine cutting and graphics, the artist established a medium that contrasts machine-made and handmade pieces granted that there is a formal similarity between them. “This is logically connected to the conveyor work, which demands that each piece be similar to the other. Overcoming the disempowerment of art labor, each sculpture is individualized by the writing...”, – notes Grishaev.
