From the Clinical Record series
The artist initially published a book under this title, presenting a visual narrative interspersed with snatches of text. The story is about a hypochondriac who is slowly dying of an illness (it is unclear whether it is real or imaginary) which is destroying his body and mind. Photographs taken from the book form independent images that are divorced from their context and, by contrasting with one another, create an entirely new concept. Ivan Petrokovich says that “the same images displayed in a book, as an installation in a factory, or at GUM – the “temple of capitalism” opposite the Kremlin – gain completely different, even diametrically opposed meanings. I see these transformations and connections as the main conceptual characteristic of images.”
