Alexander Yulikov

Alexander Yulikov

was born on February 12, 1943, in the town of Vyatskiye Polyany, Kirov Region. His family moved there during the war years. Since 1945, lives in Moscow.

At the age of 11 enrolled in the Moscow Secondary Art School under the Academy of Arts of the Soviet Union (1954—1961). Many renowned Russian artists studied there. In 1961-1966, studied at the Moscow Higher Academy of Arts and Industry (previously known as the Stroganov Academy).

In 1966-1969, studied at the Moscow Polygraphy Institute (starting from the third year, specialization: graphic artist).

Member of the Moscow City Graphic Artists’ Committee since 1969. Member of the Artists’ Union of the USSR since 1986. In July 1986, Alexander was expelled from the Union due to the publication of the article “Fishies in a Muddy Pond” in the “Soviet Culture” newspaper on July 5, 1986. Reinstated in the Union in the fall of 1989. Since 1965, works with publishing houses as an artist (most notably Iskusstvo/Art Publishing House). Since 1968, exhibits works at key Moscow locations (VDNH, Izmaylovo, Tretyakov Gallery, MMOMA) as well as exhibitions of a more local calibre (Oscar Rabin apartment, Leonid Sokov’s and Mikhail Odnoralov’s studios, etc.).

In 2017, MMOMA (10 Gogolevsky Boulevard) hosted his large-scale solo exhibition “Postsuprematism” which highlighted 96 paintings (including 5 pieces from the Tretyakov Gallery collection and 1 painting from the Russian Museum collection) as well as 31 graphic works (including 11 pieces from the Tretyakov Gallery collection).

From May 24 to July 30, 2023, the State Tretyakov Gallery (10 Krymsky Val) hosted his solo painting exhibition “Spatial Alternatives.”

Since 2002, Yulikov’s works can be seen in the permanent collection of the Tretyakov Gallery. Alexander Yulikov’s artworks are included in the collections of leading museums around the world. The largest collections of his works can be viewed at the State Tretyakov Gallery (Moscow) and the Norton Dodge collection (Zimmerli Art Museum, USA). Other museums include the State Russian Museum (Saint Petersburg), MMOMA (Moscow), State Center of Contemporary Art (Moscow), Neue Galerie — Sammlung Ludwig (Aachen, Germany), Ludwig Múzeum (Budapest, Hungary), Contemporary Art Museum (Ljubljana, Slovenia), Centre Georges-Pompidou (Paris). In January 2020, Alexander Yulikov was awarded the Barnett and Annalee Newman Foundation Award in recognition of his “individuality and independence.” Foundation trustee: Frank Stella.
