Sergey Sapozhnikov

Sergey Sapozhnikov

Born in 1984 in Rostov-on-Don. Graduated from the Psychology Faculty of the South Federal University (formerly Rostov State University) and the Institute for Contemporary Art in Moscow (New Artistic Strategies Course). Sergey Sapozhnikov initially worked as a graphic artist. In part street art has influenced the aesthetic of his photos. His artworks are exquisitely crafted artistic statements, yet they do not display a strive for beauty and estheticism. On the contrary, the artist, at times, consciously establishes an effect of impure compositions in his work. Sapozhnikov returns the heritage of Baroque to its rightful position via his pieces. He adapts Baroque techniques in photos. His artworks are notable for the flatness of the depicted objects, color texture interplay, dynamism, Baroque excess, almost grotesque compositions, absurd acts and poses. The artist’s solo exhibitions were held in Rostov-on-Don (2007, 2016), Moscow (2008, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019), Samara (2015), Voronezh (2016), Milan (2014). Artworks by Sergey Sapozhnikov can be seen at the State Tretyakov Gallery (Moscow), MMoMA, Vladimir Smirnov and Konstantin Sorokin Foundation Collection (Moscow), Museo Poldi Pezzoli (Milan, Italy), Alberto Sandretti Collection (Italy), Jos Stelling Collection (Netherlands).
